Vibe coding

Building software by describing what you want to an AI and accepting its code largely without reading it, judging only whether the result seems to work.

The phrase was coined by Andrej Karpathy in early 2025 to describe a style of programming where you talk to an AI, accept its changes, paste error messages back when something breaks, and mostly forget that the code exists.

Vibe coding is genuinely useful for throwaway prototypes, personal tools, and exploring an idea quickly. It lets people with little programming experience build working software.

The risk is everything you never looked at. Code nobody has read can hide security holes, leaked secrets, data loss bugs, and a structure that becomes impossible to change. For anything other people will use or that touches real data, move from vibe coding to agentic coding with review, tests, and a clear understanding of what was built.
